Here are answers to common questions about propane forge burners. If you need additional help, please contact us.
What temperature can a propane forge reach? +
A properly tuned propane forge burner can reach 2,300°F or higher, which is sufficient for forge welding. Forced-air burners can reach even higher temperatures. The actual temperature depends on burner BTU, forge insulation, and air-to-gas ratio.
How long does a propane tank last when forging? +
A 20 lb propane tank typically lasts 4–8 hours of continuous forging, depending on burner BTU output and gas pressure setting. A well-tuned venturi burner running at moderate pressure can run on under a gallon of propane per hour.
Is propane or coal better for forging? +
Propane forges are cleaner, easier to start, and provide consistent heat. Coal forges are traditional and can reach higher temperatures but produce more smoke and require more maintenance. Most modern smiths prefer propane for convenience and control.
Do I need a high-pressure or low-pressure propane regulator? +
Most venturi forge burners require a high-pressure regulator (0–20 PSI or 0–30 PSI) to draw enough air for proper combustion. Forced-air burners can often use low-pressure regulators (11 PSI) since the blower provides the air flow. Check your burner's specifications.
